Mikumi National Park
The Little Serengeti of Southern Tanzania
Why Visit Mikumi National Park
Mikumi is often called “The Little Serengeti” because of its wide, open grasslands that mirror the famous Serengeti ecosystem. This makes it one of the best spots in southern Tanzania for easy game viewing.
The park is home to abundant wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, lions, hippos, and crocodiles. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the rare African wild dog.
For bird enthusiasts, Mikumi is a paradise with over 400 bird species. From colorful lilac-breasted rollers to ostriches, hornbills, and migratory species, the skies and plains are always alive with birdlife.
One of Mikumi’s biggest advantages is its accessibility. Located just 4–5 hours from Dar es Salaam on a tarmac road, it’s the perfect safari destination for short holidays, weekend trips, or even business travelers looking for a quick wildlife escape.
Adding to the charm is its scenic backdrop. The Uluguru Mountains to the northeast and the Udzungwa Mountains to the west create breathtaking horizons, making game drives not only about wildlife but also about incredible scenery.
Best Time to Visit
-
June – October (Dry Season):
This is the best time for wildlife viewing. As rivers and waterholes shrink, animals gather in huge numbers, making them easier to spot. The grass is short and dry, which increases visibility. Predators like lions are more active during this period, taking advantage of the concentrated prey. The dry season also means roads are in better condition, ensuring smoother safaris. -
November – May (Wet Season):
During this period, the park becomes a lush green paradise. The landscapes are stunning, flowers bloom, and migratory birds arrive, making it the prime season for birdwatching. Hippo pools are especially lively, and elephants are often seen enjoying the fresh vegetation. However, some tracks may get muddy and harder to navigate.
👉 Year-Round Destination:
What makes Mikumi special is that it is great all year round. The dry season is best for spotting big mammals, while the wet season is unbeatable for birds, greenery, and photography.
