Ruaha National Park
Tanzania’s Hidden Giant of the Wild
Why Visit Ruaha National Park
Tanzania’s Best-Kept Secret:
Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park by land area (about 20,000 km²), but it remains one of the least visited — meaning a true wilderness experience with fewer crowds.
Elephant Kingdom:
The park hosts Tanzania’s largest elephant population. During the dry season, it’s common to see hundreds of elephants gathered along the Great Ruaha River, an unforgettable sight.
Big Predator Action:
Ruaha is famous for its large lion prides (sometimes over 20 lions together), as well as healthy populations of leopards, cheetahs, and the rare African wild dog. It’s one of the best parks in Africa to see predator-prey interactions.
Dramatic Landscapes:
The scenery is striking — rolling hills, baobab-studded plains, rocky escarpments, and the lifeline of the Great Ruaha River cutting through the park. This diversity creates habitats for a huge variety of wildlife.
Birdwatching Heaven:
With more than 570 bird species, including endemics and rare raptors, Ruaha is a dream destination for bird lovers.
Best Time to Visit
June – October (Dry Season):
The riverbanks become the stage for thrilling wildlife viewing. As waterholes dry up, animals — from elephants and buffalo to lions and leopards — concentrate around the Great Ruaha River. This is the best time for predator action, dramatic game viewing, and comfortable weather.
November – April (Green Season):
The park turns lush and green, with wildflowers and migratory birds arriving in large numbers. This is paradise for birdwatchers and photographers. Predator sightings are still excellent, though wildlife is more spread out.
April – May (Heavy Rains):
Some lodges may close due to accessibility issues, but the park is at its most vibrant and untouched during this time.
👉 Overall: For big game and dramatic river action, choose the dry season. For lush scenery and birding, visit during the green season.
Safari Experience
Classic Game Drives:
Morning and evening drives reveal elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, and rare wild dogs, often without another vehicle in sight. The sense of exclusivity makes every drive special.

Spot elusive nocturnal animals like aardvarks, genets, porcupines, civets, and owls. Lions and leopards are also more active at night, creating unforgettable moments.

Specialized bird safaris can be arranged, where you can see everything from the Ashy starling to the Ruaha hornbill.
