Tanzania Weather & Best Time to Visit
At Matiya Tours & Safaris, we want you to experience Tanzania at its very best. Understanding the country’s weather patterns helps you plan the perfect safari and make the most of every moment of your journey.
☀️ Tanzania’s Climate at a Glance
Tanzania enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year, typically ranging between 22°C and 31°C (72°F – 88°F). The country experiences two main seasons — the Dry Season and the Wet Season — each offering its own unique safari experiences.
🌞 Dry Season (June – October)
This is the peak safari season in Tanzania, with clear skies, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures. It’s the perfect time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources, making sightings easy and rewarding. The dry months are also ideal for photography, outdoor adventures, and exploring the national parks. Because this is the most popular time for visitors, it’s recommended to book your safari early to secure the best accommodations and guides.
🌧 Wet Season (November – May)
The wet season is divided into two parts: the short rains from November to December, characterized by brief, light showers often falling in the early morning or evening, and the long rains from March to May, when rainfall becomes heavier and more frequent. Despite the rain, this season has its own magic. The landscapes transform into lush, green scenery that’s breathtaking for photography. With fewer tourists, you can enjoy a more peaceful safari experience. It’s also a fantastic time for birdwatching, as many migratory species visit Tanzania during these months.
🗺 Regional Weather Differences
In the Northern Parks such as Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro, the climate remains moderate most of the year, with the heaviest rains usually falling in April. The Ngorongoro Crater Rim, being at a higher altitude, experiences chilly mornings and evenings, so it’s wise to pack a warm layer.
In Arusha City, Tanzania’s main safari hub, the weather is pleasant year-round and slightly cooler than other regions. With its beautiful views of Mount Meru, Arusha makes an excellent stopover before or after your safari.
The Southern Parks, including Nyerere (Selous), Mikumi, Ruaha, Katavi, Gombe, and Mahale, tend to be warmer and more humid due to their lower altitude. These areas are ideal for travelers seeking a remote, off-the-beaten-path safari experience.
✅ Our Tip
The best time for safari in Tanzania is during the Dry Season (June – October), when wildlife viewing is at its peak. However, the Wet Season offers its own charm — with vibrant landscapes, fewer crowds, and a deep connection with nature that can make your journey just as unforgettable.
